Mary Jane Mueller, 94, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, October 23, 2017, at Columbus Care and Rehabilitation Center, after a short bout with leukemia. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 27 at 10:30 AM at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Pastor Adam Lassen officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Friday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Friday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested as those of the donor's or family choice. Mary Jane Adeline Engel was born August 17, 1923, to Siebert Wilhelm and Helen Magdalena (Klug) Engel in rural Platte County, Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Columbus. She graduated from Kramer High School in 1941, after which she studied one semester at the local Commercial College. Mary Jane worked at the ASCS office from 1941 to 1943. Mary Jane married Walter Emil Mueller on April 19, 1943, at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage in Hartington, Nebraska. She was a homemaker, supporting Walt’s farming and livestock operations during their years on the farm. After they retired and moved to Columbus in 1973, she worked at Tempo until the store closed. She also worked at the Columbus Horse Races for several racing seasons. Walt died on April 21, 1992. Mary Jane developed many friendships through her many interests and hobbies. She enjoyed playing Bridge, Pitch, and Mexican Train (especially with her friends at Crown Villa), attending garage sales and auctions. She delivered Meals on Wheels, helped with Bingo in a local nursing home, and recycled greeting cards at Crown Villa. Mary Jane was a faithful member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ where her activities included teaching Sunday School and serving as Sunday School Superintendent. Mary Jane was a member and secretary of the Women’s Fellowship and a member of Esther and Rhoda Circles. She also enjoyed embroidery, having cross-stitched tea towels for all the girls in her family. She was very proud of her family and loved attending their activities as long as her health allowed her to do so.
