Bio

John Basil Gest was born 11 Sep 1947 at Austin, Travis County, TX and was welcomed by adoptive parents, John H. and Claudine Tydlacka Gest. They lived on Eva Dr. and then moved to Ridgelea Dr. in central Austin amidst aunts, uncles, and cousins during the early years. J.B. attended St. Austin’s Catholic School, O’Henry Junior High (1961-1963) and graduated from Lanier High School in 1965. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam from Dec. 1966 to Aug. 1972 with an honorable discharge. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, and Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star. In 1975, he married Judy Breaux and, on 8 Oct 1977 they welcomed their daughter, Tracey Nicole, who was the light of his life. John loved the south Texas coast and lived there for several years before his mother’s failing health drew him back to Austin. He was a very devoted son and took excellent care of his mother during her last years. John passed peacefully at Seton Hospital at Austin on 15 Aug 2017 only blocks from his childhood home. He was predeceased by his parents, John Herman Gest, Jr. and Claudine Tydlacka Gest. A memorial service was held on 11 Sep 2017 at Assumption Cemetery, Austin with family and friends in attendance. A Navy Honor Guard presented the U.S. flag to his daughter and played Taps.
