Jackie David Sershen, 85, of Austin, Minn., died at his residence on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. Jackie was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Waseca, Minn., to John and Alice (Clarke) Sershen. He spent his childhood in Waterville and Elysian, Minn., and Los Angeles, Calif. Jack served his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Navy. He was in the National Guard and then the Merchant Marine of the Great Lakes where he worked on an iron ore boat. He was married to Helen Schaefer in Austin on Oct. 31, 1949. They had three sons. Jack enjoyed boxing, snowmobiling, camping and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He worked for 35 years in Albert Lea, Minn., at Streator's as a tool and die maker, eventually retiring as superintendent. He began his second career of fishing at his second home at Lake Winnibigoshish. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, brother and great-grandchild. A funeral Mass for Jackie Sershen will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. There will be visitation one hour prior to services at the church and from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home. Condolences may be left for the family at: www.mayerfh.com.
