Philip Lawrence, age 89, of Decatur passed away at 7:25 a.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Graveside services with Military Rites honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Dodge Grove Cemetery with Pastor Brad Brown officiating. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family. Philip was born on September 18, 1928 in Mattoon the son of Charles M. and Lora (Peters) Lawrence. He married Eleanor Morrison on June 6, 1964. Eleanor passed away within hours after her loving husband. Survivors include niece, Annetta Cannon of Godfrey, IL; nephew, Richard Behen of Decatur, IL; great nieces and nephews, Karen Behen (Carla Shaw), Steve Behen, Carol (Rick), Kesler, Frank Roose, Dan Roose, Cindy Enloe, Debra Ostermeier, Cheryl Rankin, Mark Crean, Jon Graham, John (Nancy) Lawrence, Donald Lawrence, Kay Scaffidi and Sue Stanley. Philip was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert (Denny) Campbell; two brother and two sisters. Phil was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mattoon. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Phil worked for Staley’s in Decatur for several years before retiring in 1987. Phil was a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge. In his spare time, he enjoyed solving puzzle books, watching and cheering for his beloved Chicago Cubs. He was so happy and proud to see his Cubbies win the 2016 World Series! Phil and Eleanor would often travel to area casinos where he loved to try his luck at the craps table.
