Died in POW camp in Korean War/Korea. Remains have not been recovered.
Master Sgt Romanek (World War 2 Veteran) served with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. On November 30, 1950, Romanek was captured while fighting enemy forces during a major withdrawal of the 2nd Infantry Division from the area of Kunu-ri N. Korea. He died in a North Korean prisoner of war camp on January 20, 1951. His remains were not recovered. MSGT Romanek was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor & Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Combat Infantry Badge.
