The first public record of Frances Herndon Compton is found in the 1799 Lynches Creek Baptist church minutes. Her father David Herndon was a well known founding member of this church. "Frances Compton" is listed as a member in 1799 along with her mother and father. According to the widows pension Frances filed, she and James were married near Stone Meetings House in Caswell County, NC in approximately 1781. Stone Meetings House was the meeting location for Wheeley's Bapist Church. James and Frances lived in the Guilford/Orange/Caswell North Carolina area until the late 1820's when they migrated to Russell County, VA where several of their children lived. It appears James and Frances lived with their son David upon their arrival in Russell County. James died in 1832 and then Frances probably split time living with the children there. James died in 1832 in Russell County and is most likely buried in the Claypool Cemetery which was in view of where James was living with his son David. Therefore it is likely Frances would have been buried alongside James in the Claypool cemetery although no stones exist. Frances filed for a widows pension in 1848 and much information is given in it although all of their children are not named.
