VICTORIA - Winfred A. Kainer, 88, of Victoria passed away on Friday, September 8, 2017. He was born January 19, 1929 in Schulenburg, TX to Edmund A. and Hilda Hollas Kainer. Winfred was a farmer in the Victoria community for over 40 years and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church throughout his life. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kainer was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin Kainer and Alton Kainer. A few years after his 1946 Patti Welder graduation, Winfred enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict, spending time in San Diego, Hawaii , and Moffett Field, CA. Then, he enrolled at Texas A & M University in College Station, majored in Agronomy, and became a proud member of the Class of '58. Winfred soon began farming, also classing cotton for the U.S.D.A during the fall seasons of 1961 to 1966. For 32 years, beginning in 1967, he sold Northrup King (later Novartis) grain sorghum seed, corn seed, and soybean seed. He became active in many farm organizations, joining Farm Bureau in 1960, serving on numerous committees, and as an officer, and participating in state conventions. He also served terms as President of the Victoria County unit of the South Texas Cotton and Grain Sorghum Association in the 1970s, and was a member of the Grain Sorghum Producers Board from 1989-1993. In 1994, he was one of two farmers selected by the United States Feed Grains Council to visit Turkey, Morocco, and Israel with a U.S.D.A representative to promote the selling of feed grains to these countries. Winfred received the 1970 Outstanding Conservation Farmer award in the Victoria Soil and Water Conservation District, partly for his participation in a program to reduce downy mildew crop infestations. He received the 'Person of the Year Agricultural Award' presented by the Victoria Chamber of Commerce in 1994, and in 2015 received the Pioneer award from the Victoria County Farm Bureau. He also served on 4-H Committees while his children were active in 4-H, and later was an active member of the DaCosta Sons of Hermann Lodge, Hochheim Prairie Insurance Co. Branch 5, the Polka and Waltz Club, and the Lone Tree Volunteer Fire Department. At Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Winfred was a Lector, a Eucharistic Minister and an involved member of the Holy Name Society , serving as President for several years. Winfred enjoyed all of these activities and he enjoyed getting to know the people in his community. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 11, 2017 from 5-7 PM at Rosewood Funeral Chapels with a rosary to be recited at 7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Rev. Albert Yankey officiating.
