Bio

Paul N. Lewandowski, 87, of Mitchell, was called to rest Saturday May 16, 2009 at his home. Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday May 20, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Mitchell with Father Stephen Deaver and Father Anthony Madhichetti as co-celebrants. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A Rosary Service will be held on Tuesday May 19 at 7 p.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Inurnment will take place at the Mitchell City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church. Paul was born May 5, 1922 at Ashton, Neb., the son of Paul and Mary (Waskowiak) Lewandowski. Paul's father was a successful rancher and farmer. The family moved to the Broken Bow area when he was a young child and Paul attended school and graduated from the 8th grade at the Snake Run School. Paul moved to the Mitchell area in his early 40's and worked for Johnsons north of Mitchell. In 1943 he joined the army. He served as a replacement depot driver in England and France during World War II. He had the honor of meeting General Patton and the other Generals as well during this time. He was united in marriage to Georgia Pearl Ferrier on Dec. 26, 1945 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Mitchell. The couple made their home in Mitchell while Paul worked for and later managed the local lumber company. They were blessed with four children and lived in the area for some 60 years. Paul and Pearl spent several wonderful summers in Canada following their retirement. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, Kiwanis, the Moose Lodge of Scottsbluff, Knights of Columbus (50 years), the Michie McKeuown American Legion Post 124 (64 years � serving as commander for three of those years). He also served on the Scotts Bluff county fair board for 30 years, assisted the social services, along with Pearl, handing out commodities, and volunteered at the Regional West Medical Center for 22 years. Paul was also a collector of antiques. Paul is survived by his sons: Timmy Edward (Debbie) Lewandowski of Vero Beach, Fla., and Dennis Ray (Cindy) Lewandowski of Loveland, Colo.; daughter: Vicky Jean Settles of Mitchell; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; brothers Richard (Kathy) Lewandowski of Seminole,Florida, and Edward Lewandowski of Lincoln, Neb. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, young son (Val Allen in 1953), parents, five brothers, and several uncles, aunts, and cousins.
