Alton Leroy Murphree was the son of Alby Lee Murphree (1879-1957) and Lena Ellen Beck Murphree (1887-1919). When Alton was almost six months old, his Mother died of asphyxiation when she blew on the stove to re-kindle the fire. Alton spent his early years living with his Aunt and Uncle, Euna Beck Donalson and A.W. Donalson. At the age of 22, Alton was a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy and was located at the Navy Yard at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Since Pearl Harbor was bombed on a Sunday morning, Alton was at his apartment. When he heard the attack, he went to the rooftop of his apartment building and watched the destruction. Alton and his first wife, Muriel, were the parents of Alton Murphree, Jr., nicknamed "Spud" by the family. After Alton and Muriel were divorced, at the age of fourteen Spud was killed in a car/train wreck. His Mother was badly injured, his half-sister's three-month old daughter was killed, and his Mother's nephew was also killed. Alton and his second wife, Jeanne, also had a son, Michael Lee, who was born in 1955. Mike passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2007, in Fort Worth, after living in Salt Lake City for over 30 years. Alton worked at LTV for many years and was retired at the time of his death. He is still missed by the many friends and relatives he left behind.
