exas Czech Genealogical Society. Czech Family Histories, Volume IV. 2007. p. 401-405. P6 - Pokorny, Josef and Rozina (Belicek) of Polanka, Moravia. Written by Elsie Pokorny Barton. Submitted by Frances Barton. Selections: In 1881, the family consisted of Josef Pokorny, 44 years old, and Rozina (Belicek) Pokorny, age 38, and five children: John, 15; Veruna, 11; Rozina, 10: Josef, 4; and Teresa, 1 year old. They left their home in the village of Polanka in Moravia along with 21 other people including Anton and Mary Safarik and two children, the Kohutek family, the George Kaspar family, the George Zak family, and a few others – 28 in all. They travelled in wagons to Hamburg, Germany and waited four days to board the ship to America. Twenty-one days later they reached New York where they stayed for a week at a place for immigrants called Castor Garden. Finally they boarded a ship named "Canada" and got to Galveston in ten days. At Galveston, they took a train immediately to Taylor. They did not know anyone in Taylor, so they hired wagons to take all 28 of them to Rices Crossing where the Roznovaks lived, a family they had known in Moravia. The nine mile trip to Rices Crossing took seven hours. Josef and Rozina first settled in the Cole community, southwest of Rices Crossing. Then they bought 136 acres of land from a Mr. McCutcheon. This plot was located between Taylor and Rices Crossing and has been known as the Arthur Mikulencak place. All six of the children of Josef and Rozina grew up on the place along with one new child, Pavel, who was born in Texas. Contributor: Joe David (48095253) • [email protected]
