The Mapleton Press, Friday, 26 Sep 1902, page 8, reports that Mr. Hamman committed suicide "last Wednesday" at the county poor farm where he had been an inmate for many years. He was divorced from his wife, Marie Busacker, and was unwell, both mentally and physically. He tied a sack of bricks around his ankles and plunged through a manhole into a 250 barrel cement reservoir. The 1900 census says he was divorced, born Dec 1834, and places him at the Monona County Poor Farm in Kennebec. A civil war service record shows that he enlisted on 25 Aug 1862. He enlisted in Company D, Iowa 1st Cavalry Regiment on 27 Sep 1862. Mustered out on 28 May 1865 at Memphis, TN. I think "last Wednesday" means not this past Wednesday (the 24th), but the one before that, which would be the 17th.
