Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent Saturday, 19 May 1923, page 1 TWO CHILDREN BURIED ALIVE Small Son and Daughter of Burwell Mail Carrier Cave-In Victims Burwell, Neb., May 19 - A very distressing accident occurred about 5 p.m. Friday at the sand pit three miles from this place when Mildred [sic] and Fred [sic] Hahn, 13 and 11 years old, respectively, children of Fred Hahn, mail carrier of Burwell, met their deaths as the result of a cave-in of a huge sand pile at the pit, smothering both of the children. The two little ones were alone at the time. They were playing in a cave on one side of the large sand pile which had been formed by the recent wind blowing away a portion of the sand. It is presumed that the top of the pile caved in, burying the two children beneath. When they failed to return home, a search was instituted. They were found at the foot of a huge sand back, one of the little girl's feet, which protruded from the sand, leading to the discovery of their bodies. The bodies were taken to Columbus, Neb., for burial.
