Bio

Newton Jasper Humphreys was the son of Moses John Humphreys and Rebecca Boyd, both from Tennessee. Newton moved with his parents to Jasper county, Iowa for the 1860 census and Shelby county, Iowa for the 1870 census. Here, on 12 Oct 1873, he married Harriett McGinness and four children were born. Newton and his family moved to Brown county, Nebraska by 1884. He was farming at Cuba, Nebraska in 1890. Newton and Hattie divorced by 1900. She remarried in 1909 and moved to California with her new husband. Newton moved to South Dakota to be near his son. Hattie and her 2nd husband divorced after 1920, she moved back from California and remarried Newton about 1925. After Hattie died, in 1928, Newton lived with their daughter Stella. The children of Newton and Hattie: 1. Stella/Estella Bell Humphreys married Thomas Curtis Wright 2. Alfred Leroy "Roy" Humphrey (no "s") married 1st to Carrie L. Thanum (son James). Roy married 2nd to Sophia Portnoy (sons Ernest Leroy and Lyle J.) 3. Edna Mary Humphrey(s) born 22 Feb 1878/1879 at Harlan, Shelby, Iowa died in Colorado (in 1900 she is attending Fremont Normal and Business College at Fremont, Dodge, Ne.) Edna married Francis Stanton Rose. 3 children: Orin Stanton Rose 1908-1977; Velma Verone Rose Bullard 1909-2000; Austin H Rose 1912-1980 4. Grace Leona Humphreys born 10 July 1881 at Shelby county, Iowa married John E. Paddock.
