Bio

Maude Justice Raper O'Dell, 93 years, peacefully entered a new life Tuesday, July 18, 2017. A Memorial/Birthday Celebration will be from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, September 16, at Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ, 11908 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 76759, one day after Maude's 94th birthday. Maude will be laid to rest among five generations in the family cemetery, Oakes Cemetery, in Donie, Texas. Maude was the fourth of five children born on the family farm in Donie, Texas, to Marcus and Lurley Oakes Justice. The family moved to La Vega where Maude started third grade. Madge (as she came to be known) was third in her 1941 graduating class. After secretarial school in Oklahoma City, she returned to Waco, working at the Justice Cafe and Triple X Root Beer. During this time, Maude married and had three children. She then started in the secretarial pool at Phillips North American Rockwell/Rocketdyne, attaining the position of Tactical Editor. Maude worked for 23 years until she was laid off, and went on to continue her career at Firmin Business Forms. Retirement brought a renewed friendship with high school friend Lonnie O'Dell. They married in 1987 and enjoyed almost 20 years of travel, church outings and comfortable companionship. After Lonnie's death, Maude filled her days reading, quilting and pulling weeds (a relaxing pastime for her). She especially enjoyed playing Mexican Train dominoes with a dear circle of church friends. These friends include Susan Chambers and Tricia Brock, who Maude considered daughters of her heart. Maude's last two years were spent in Waco, living with Nada and John Jones. During this time, the family continued the tradition of game night every Sunday evening. She was able to travel with the family on several memorable vacations. One particular vacation saw Maude swim with dolphins during a 91st birthday cruise. Thank you, Mother, for giving us all a strong sense of family loyalty, commitment to friendships, appreciation of hard honest work, the ability to laugh in any situation, and the knowledge that yesterday's regrets will not cloud tomorrow's joy. Our Mother's faith was deep and that faith sustained her during many difficult situations. We love you, Madge. Awaiting Maude in Heaven are her four siblings; the father of her children, Ralph Raper; bonus husband, Lonnie O'Dell; and precious grandson, Bryan Raper. Left behind to laugh and cry are Nancy and Mickey Williams, Randy and Debbie Raper, Nada and John Jones, Mike and Jeanne O'Dell, Jill and Joe Farmer, Randy and Sharon O'Dell; along with a combined 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
