Dorothy Mae Mikus passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, June 26, 2017, set free from all future pain. She had a long, full, vibrant life affecting many who were touched by her smile and kind gentle ways. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Dottie, the youngest of nine children, was born in Taylor, to Tom and Carolina Mikus. As a young woman, Dottie worked in San Antonio, at Frost Brothers Department Store. During World War II, she met Dick Milner, who was stationed at the nearby Air Force Base. After the war ended in September 1945, she and Dick continued a long-distance relationship with letters and occasional phone calls, which at the time, were very expensive. Dick soon proposed to Dottie on the telephone. She accepted, with the condition that she would marry him only after meeting his family. Dottie soon traveled to Oakland, California to meet Dick's family, who welcomed her with open hearts. On Aug. 21, 1946, Dottie married Richard "Dick" Milner. They lived in the Lake Merritt area of Oakland where they raised their children, becoming active at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. After their children were grown, they moved from the family home to The Lake Royal Condominium on Lake Merritt. They remained married for 37 years until Dick's death on Dec. 6, 1983. After Dick's death, Dottie continued living at The Lake Royal. It was there that she later met Walter Corneille. They were wed on April 16, 1989. In 1991, Dottie and Walt moved to Oakmont, a senior community in Santa Rosa. After Walt's death on July 6, 1995, Dottie became more active at Star of the Valley Catholic Church, where she met and later married Pat Grill. They were married from May 8, 1998 until his death on Jan. 2, 2012. Dottie moved to Pleasanton in December of 2012 to be nearer to her children. She later moved to Heritage Estates Assisted Living community in Livermore where she enjoyed many happy days. She is survived by her three children, Sister Cheryl Milner, SNJM of Santa Cruz, Kari Barwick and her husband, Rob of Pleasanton, and Gary Milner and his wife, Patricia Klaiss Milner of Hayward; and her step-son, Matthew Grill and his wife, Julene of Tangent, Oregon. She is also survived by her 94-year-old sister, Sybil (Mikus) Sullivan of Dallas. Dottie is also survived by her three grandchildren, Christopher Milner and his wife, Rebecca Maier of Manteca, Joseph Mil¬ner and his wife, Christine Macapagal of Dublin, and Juliet Barwick of Pleasanton, and six great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Kaden, Jacob, Sophia, Joseph and Jaxson. On Friday, July 7, Dottie's friends and family gathered in Pleasanton for a Visitation and Rosary followed by a funeral mass on Saturday, July 8 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Interment was a private service at St. Mary's Cemetery in Oakland. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the dedicated professionals of Right@Home, Heritage Estates (Livermore) and the Pleasanton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
