Bio

Vern Joseph Kohler, 85 was born in __________, WA on October 3, 1921. He passed away at home on May 18, 2006 with his family present. He served as a medic during World War II, and earned a Purple Heart from an injury received in action while in Italy. He also received two Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct medal, a WWII Victory Medal and the American Theater Ribbon. After 25 years as a crane operator with Bonneville Power Administration, he retired to travel the United States with his wife, Doraine. He enjoyed seeing the country in their fifth-wheel, taking short trips into the desert on his motorcycle, and rock hunting. Vern was a devoted father to his four children, Donna Rae Selfridge, Gary Kohler, Denise Kohler and Deborah Schnorr, and grandfather to Kevin and Landon Selfridge and Benjamin Kohler. Great-grandchildren are Riley and Megan Selfridge and Alyssa and Thomas Selfridge. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hattie; his father, Frank; half-sister, Hazel; his brother, Edward; and daughter, Donna Rae. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Memorial Fund at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1220 NE 68th St, Vancouver, WA 98665 or to Hospice S.W., PO Box 1600, Vancouver, WA 98668. Viewing will be held Monday, May 22, 2006 from 12 noon to 9p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Ave., Vancouver.
