Frederick Maximilian Emile Schaefer, a former president of the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company, died Tuesday at his home in Larchmont, N.Y. He was 84 years old. Born in Denver, Mr. Schaefer was a grandson of the founders of the company in 1842. Graduated from the Columbia Grammar School in New York, Mr. Schaefer studied with brewmasters here and in Zurich before joining the company as a clerk in 1912. He was a director and treasurer before he became president in 1923. He resigned in 1927 because of ill health, later resuming work as vice president. He retired in 1949. He was a lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps in World War 1. Mr. Schaefer belonged to the New York, Larchmont and Horseshoe Harbor Yacht Clubs, the Explorers Club and the New York Athletic Club. He had been a trustee of Lenox Hill Hospital since 1935. Mr. Schaefer leaves his wife, the former Helene Hollis Goldsmith; a son, Henry Rudolph; 2 daughters, Frederica Otis Newell and Winifred F. Chesley; a brother, Rudolph J., a former president of Schaefer's, 15 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren. There will be a funeral at 11 A.M. tomorrow at St. John's Episcopal Church in Larchmont.
