Bio

Mary Grace Hullett Allen, age 89, died December 7th, 2009. She was born on Sand Mountain, in Blount County, AL, on May 8th, 1920 to Rev. and Mrs. William Hullett and grew up wherever her Father served a Methodist congregation. These were small southern towns like New Symrna Beach and Crescent City Florida and Gadsden, Alabama. "Mom told a story about her minister Father in North Alabama," said daughter Donna Paulson. "Local workers were trying to unionize and several men were badly beaten. Her father spoke out against the violence from the pulpit and then he was threatened with bodily harm by people who knew how to do it. Alabama Governor Bibb Graves called Rev. Hullett and assured him he and his family would be protected. And they were. Mom lived those lessons. Good people speak out." Mary Grace Hullet married Robert Carl Allen, who lived across the street from her, in 1942. They raised three daughters in Gardendale, AL and were happy together for over 50 years until his passing in 1997. For years she was a legal secretary at Bradley Arant Rose and White. A splendid cook and an accomplished - if reluctant - seamstress, Mary made her daughters' Easter dresses, prom dresses and school dresses often working late into the wee hours, the night before they were to be worn. Mary directed the choir for many years as a devoted member of Gardendale Methodist Church. "Even after Mom stopped directing the choir she still sang with her hand pumping up and down, directing under her hymn book," added daughter Audrey Hasenbein. Mary loved days spent at Smith Lake, china painting, traveling (though her husband was a homebody), and most of all being with her family. She enjoyed living her later years at Galleria Woods Retirement Community. Mary Allen is survived by three devoted daughters, Audrey Hasenbein of Gulf Shores, AL, Donna Paulson of Baltimore, MD and Jan Nunnally of Birmingham; their husbands, George Hasebein, David Paulson, and Jack Nunnally; grandchildren, Quint Hasenbein, Jesse Paulson (Jennifer), Adria Bryars (Tony), Cada Paulson, Allen Nunnally; and great-grandchildren, Breanna DeStefano and Josh Bryars. A celebration of her life will be held at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover, at 12 noon Friday, December 11th, preceded by visitation from 10 am-12pm. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
