Laura Mae Warner “Nana” 1930 – 2017 On June 4, 2017, Laura Mae (Hawkins) Warner, 86, a lifelong Tehachapi resident and a descendent of the original Tehachapi settlers, passed away with her family by her side. Laura was born to Percy John “Jack” and Velma Mae (Brite) Hawkins on September 5, 1930. Laura had two younger brothers, Don Hawkins and Gene Hawkins. With the exception of the first three months, Laura lived in Tehachapi her entire life and attended Tehachapi schools. She graduated from Tehachapi High School in 1948. While in high school, she met the love of her life, Jerome Earl Warner, and they were married on June 24, 1951, in the Tehachapi Community Church. Together Laura and Jerome built their house and raised their two sons, Robert Wayne Warner and Gary Ray Warner. The 1952 earthquake proved to be only an interruption in their life, as the well-built home was unscratched. Laura and Jerome were happily married for 49 years, until Jerome’s passing in 2000. Laura was active in her sons’ Cub Scouts, Little League, PTA, and the High School Booster Club. Upon her sons’ graduation, Laura started a career at California Correctional Institution (CCI) to help support Bob and Gary’s college education. Laura worked at CCI as a custody timekeeper, before computers, for 20 years before she retired. Laura’s dedication, hard work, and love of her family was also mirrored in her support of the Tehachapi community. Laura served as the charter member of Tehachapi Order of Rainbow Girls, and she was the grand representative to Arizona from 1949-1950. She was also active in the Tehachapi Senior Center, the Red Hat Society, high school athletics, and she assisted in arranging several high school class reunions. Laura’s hobbies included line dancing, bunco groups, fishing in the Eastern Sierras, and playing the penny slot machines. She also enjoyed getting her hands dirty while gardening and slaying pesky gophers. Above all else, Laura proved to be a selfless and consistent friend to many people, while maintaining her feistiness, witty one-liners, and her sense of humor. Laura was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jerome, and her brother, Don. Her legacy lives on through her son, Bob, his wife, Cheri, and their daughter, Brooke Warner of Port Orchard, Washington; her son, Gary, his wife, Margo, and their children, Jared Warner (wife Jaime), and Sarah Wells (husband Grant), of Tehachapi, California. Laura is also survived by her brother, Gene of Bellevue, Washington. Before leaving us, Laura had the honor of holding her great-grandson, Augustus “Auggie” Wells. In addition, Laura’s memory continues on through extended family members and family friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in Laura’s honor to the Tehachapi Senior Center, P.O. Box 2056, Tehachapi, California 93581, or dropped off at 500 East F Street in Tehachapi. The services are to be held at Wood Family Funeral Service on Monday, June 12th, at 12:00 p.m., with graveside services to follow at the Tehachapi Public Cemetery – Eastside. Wood Family Funeral Service has been entrusted with her care. For condolences please visit www.woodmortuary.net.
