Jan was born in Baška # 83 (district Frýdek-Místek) on May 3, 1841, his parents were Jan and Josefina Exler Kanak. He applied for a passport in Sept. 1873. A date of his arrival to America is unknown. His Declaration was recorded in Lavaca Co. on Nov.1, 1876. He was registered on the Census of Lavaca Co. in 1880 (John Kanak, born in 1841). He died in 1897. He is buried in a private cemetery at coordinates 29.41046,-96.678228 on land he owned. When he purchased the land, he spend the night in the location of his grave site, and said that there is where he wished to be buried. Therefore his remains were not moved to the Saint Mary's Cemetery in Lavaca County, Texas as was his wife Tekla. Tekla Sajtar Kanakova (Find A Grave Memorial# 53359092), his wife, was born in Trnávka # 47 on Sept. 23, 1841, her parents were Franz Sajtar and Johana (a daughter of Andreas Londin and Mariana Reyda). She died on Nov. 17, 1903 and was buried in St.Mary cemetery in Lavaca County, TX (Find A Grave Memorial# 53359092) . Jan, a son, was born in Kuncice pod Ondrejníkem # 78 on Jan. 12, 1873. He apparently died prior to 1880 since he is not included on the 1880 Lavaca County census of Jan Kanak. A daughter T.M.S Kanak was born in 1878 in Lavaca County, Texas per 1880 census, but apparently died prior to the 1900 census. A son, John was born in December 1879 (per 1880 census).
