Albert W. Cervenka, 87, a longtime resident of Findlay, died peacefully at his residence surrounded by family on May 5, 2017. Al was born on April 21, 1930 in Granger, Texas to Albert and Otilia (Kocurek) Cervenka. On November 21, 1955, he married Claudine Alexander in St. Christopher Catholic Church, Houston, Texas and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Claudine; their daughter, Dr. Susan Alexander of Denver, Colorado; their sons, Mark Cervenka (Melanie) of Danville, California and Dennis Cervenka (Julia) of Charleston, South Carolina; and their grand-daughters, Amanda Montague (Selby Lighthill) of Orcas Island, Washington and Kelsey Montague (Chris Topham) of Denver, Colorado. Al was preceded in death by his brother, Norman Cervenka; his sister, Mary Lou Carpenter; and his parents. Al graduated from Granger High School in 1945 at the age of 14. He attended St. Mary's University, a Catholic Seminary, in La Porte, Texas, and graduated from St. Edward's University, Austin, Texas in 1949. During the Korean War, Al served in the U.S. Army, with a military intelligence unit stationed on the border of Czechoslovakia. Upon being honorably discharged, Al earned a Doctorate in Jurisprudence from the University of Houston College of Law in 1957. He remained a member of the Texas Bar Association for 60 years. Al joined the Ohio Oil Company in 1953. He held a variety of challenging assignments and represented the company on various state and federal trade associations, including serving as the Chairman of the Regulations Subcommittee of the American Petroleum Institute's National Excise Tax Committee, and serving as Vice Chairman of the Sales and Use Tax Committee of the National Tax Association - Tax Institute of America. He also served as Chairman of the Hancock County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He retired from the Marathon Oil Company in 1986 as the Division Manager of its Property and Excise Tax Division. Al was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, where over the years he served on the Parish Council, the Pastoral Committee, and various ministries. Al was active in the Cursillo Movement and a founding member of the Kononia Ecumenical Movement, for which he developed the original constructs and provided direction during its formative years. Above all else, Al Cervenka was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Al lived a full and complete life, centered in logic, faith, love, and compassion, and he left his family and friends with an enduring legacy of laughter, joy, and wisdom. He appreciated the inherent precariousness of life, and he embraced William Wallace's sentiment that "every man dies; not every man lives." Al lived. He lived to the fullest capacity of his humanity, and his family and friends now celebrate the blessing of his existence and give thanks for his continued presence in their lives. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 22, 2017 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (Downtown), 617 West Main Cross Street, Findlay, with Father Scott Woods officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, May 21, 2017 from 1:00-3:00 and 5:00-7:00 p.m. at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay. Al will be interred in St. Michael's Cemetery Columbarium.
