Funeral Home Obituary: Longtime San Marcos resident Kyle W. Maysel passed from this life on April 30, 2017. He was preceded in death by his mother, Naomi Ruth Hegar Maysel, his wife, Sharon Maysel, and his father, Louis Jennings Maysel. He is survived by his brother, Kent David Maysel. Kyle was a fixture of downtown San Marcos since 1976 when he arrived from Austin to attend Southwest Texas State University. While attending SWTSU he not only obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education, he became a champion swordsman and made many lifelong friends as a member of the Southwest Texas Fencing Society. He also began a lifelong tradition of public service by serving as President of the Society. After graduation in 1981 he made the trek to Lubbock to attend the Texas Tech University School of Law. While in Lubbock he made many friends and started the Red Raider Fencing Club. Kyle’s heart was always in San Marcos and after graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 1984, he returned with his brand new law license and hung out his shingle on the square. His career on the square spanned over 30 years practicing family, criminal defense, probate, civil, and juvenile law. He was a lawyer’s lawyer. He provided office space to many a young lawyer new to the area. He saw the need for changes in the local bar association as Hays County and San Marcos began to grow in the early nineties. He recognized the law library, refurbished the Jacks/Garner scholarship fund. He became president of the Hays County Bar Association in 1996 and served continuously until 2004. Thereafter he served as a member of the board until his death. He was a member of too many organizations to list, but include the South Texas Division of the United States Fencing Association, Jaycees, Ducks Unlimited, Habitat for Humanity, and the Downtown Association. A consummate gardener with an extensive knowledge of trees, he was instrumental as a member of the Downtown Association’s beautification project in the selection and care of the many lovely trees planted around the square. He was always willing to lend a hand. He will be sorely missed. If you would like to acknowledge the passing of San Marcos’ stalwart friend, Kyle Maysel, please do so by making a donation to the American Heart Association in his honor in lieu of flowers. A Celebration of Kyle’s life will be held at Pennington Funeral Home, at 3:00 P.M., on Tuesday, May 9, 2017. Arrangements by Pennington Funeral Home
