Bio

CLARKS — Jay R. Burruss, 80, of Clarks died Monday, April 24, 2017, at Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Solt-Wagner Funeral Home in Central City, with Pastor Janice Farrell officiating. Burial will be at the Clarks Cemetery immediately following the funeral ceremony. Jay R. Burruss was born on Dec. 31, 1936, to Hubert and Mary (West) Burruss at their home in Clarks. Jay R. grew up in Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1956. While growing up, Jay R. played football, baseball and basketball for Clarks and also was a member of the local 4-H club, showing beef cattle at the county fair, State Fair, Aksarben and Denver Stock Show. Following graduation Jay R. attended college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for a year, then moved back to Clarks. On Sept. 7, 1958, Jay R. and Charlotte (King) Burruss were united in marriage at Fairview United Methodist in Central City. Jay R. and Charlotte made their home in Clarks until the mid-1960s, when they moved to the family farm in rural Clarks. During his college days, he began rodeoing, which he would continue competing in for many years. Later in life he would just enjoy roping on the weekends locally with several friends in the area. Jay R. worked on the farm, fattened cattle, and also drove trucks for several years. In 2004, Jay R. and Charlotte moved back into town in Clarks, where they still reside. Jay R. was always a cowboy; he loved working with cattle and attending rodeos, especially the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. He enjoyed square dancing, polka parties, playing cards and roping on the weekends, and always had a good joke to tell. His love of animals was very evident to all who knew him, but his greatest love of all was spending time with his family — especially getting to see his grandchildren show horses and cattle and compete in athletic events. Jay R. was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clarks, as well as being a Mason for the Clarks Masonic Lodge. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte of Clarks; his children, Marty (Peggy) Burruss of Clarks, Ginger (Rollie) Husman of Chapman and Mickey (Amy) Burruss of Clarks; and his five grandchildren, Megan and Amanda Burruss, Katie and Kasie Husman, and Brandon Burruss. He was preceded in death by his parents.
