Attending rural Boone County School District 29 and later, Cedar Rapids Public School, David quit his junior year, during WWII, to help his father farm as there were no able bodied men to hire. After retiring from farming, David realized his dream of purchasing a semi, which he drove until failing health forced him to quit in March of 2017. His love of blue rock shooting took him to many clubs in several states. According to the ATA registered shoots, he shot 172,000 singles targets, 42,000 handicaps and 1,200 doubles. He also enjoyed hosting blue rock shoots at his farm, especially for the young people that were interested in the sport. David was a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE. He was a lifetime member of the Cedar Rapids Knights of Columbus; a lifetime member of the Dan Cox American Legion Post #44; as well as a lifetime member of the American Trap Shoot Association.
