Lola Agnes Birch, 88, of Grand Island died at her home on April 5, 2017. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell. Pastor Dennis Davenport and Pastor Darrell Holzinger will officiate. Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements. Lola was born Dec. 28, 1928, in Burwell to Edward and Cora (Kinney) Combs. As a child, Lola moved with her family to South Dakota. They returned to Burwell when she was 14 years old. Lola married Russell Birch in Burwell on Sept. 30, 1946. They lived east of Burwell. They moved to Missouri for a year before moving to Hastings for a year and then to Wood Lake for four years, where she cooked for the hayfield crew. They then moved to Grand Island, where she and Russell ran a dairy and raised rabbits. She also sewed at the Needle In A Haystack for several years. After that she worked at Delicious Foods for nine years until her health forced her to retire. Lola enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and she was known for her pies. Lola is survived by her husband, Russell Birch of Grand Island; two daughters, Beverly “Kay” Eckles of St. Libory and Shirley and Philip Webb of Cairo; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Lola was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Ella May; two brothers, Evert Combs and Loren Combs; a sister, Celia Burson; and a son-in-law, Ronald Eckles.
