Salem - Carroll Wayne Farmer, 92, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2016 from kidney failure, surrounded by a loving family after a long life, well-lived. Born in Anadarko, Oklahoma to Henry and Laura Farmer, he was one of six children. They left Oklahoma for California when he was 13 years old. They were actually part of the "dust bowl", and picked crops as they migrated to California. He quit attending high school so he could attend college. He was a student at the University of California at Berkeley when he shipped out with the Navy during WWII. Post war, he returned to UC Berkeley and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics. President Harry S. Truman was his commencement speaker. Dad worked in the fruit processing industry for many years; even owning his own cannery under the label Farmer Dell. He worked in California, Idaho, Texas, and eventually settled in Salem, Oregon. He retired from the Department of Agriculture in 1987. He and Mom enjoyed many years traveling the United States in their RV, including many trips to Alaska. Dad was always available. Available for his family, friends and neighbors. The neighborhood "fix it" man, he was willing to tackle most any project! He was even our IT guy, which was not a common skill for a man his age. Dad loved to go camping and fishing. His campfire breakfasts were the best. Dad was Mom's primary caregiver for the past eight years as she began her battle with dementia. Dad modeled to his family what the words "in sickness and in health till death do us part" mean. He loved The Lord and he loved his family. Survived by his wife, Annelle, of 59 years. Children: Larry (Priscilla) Farmer of Santa Rosa, CA, Karen (Gaylen) Hayes of Paris, TX, Robert Farmer of Salem, OR, Melanie (John) Stupfel of Salem, OR, Todd (Kathy) Farmer of Stayton, OR, and Nanette (Randy) Weldon of Lincoln City, OR. 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, grandson Andrew, an infant grandson, and infant granddaughter, Amy Lynn. Private graveside service at Willamette National Cemetery. Memorial Service at Salem First Baptist Church, Community Life Center, Room #426, 395 Marion St. NE on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 3:00pm. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Union Gospel Mission or Pacific Coast Bible Church, PO Box 934, Pacific City, OR 97135. Published in the Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal on Jan. 8, 2017.
