Bio

Louis, 87, of Battle Creek, died at his home on Monday, March 27, 2017. Louis was born to Joseph and Ruth (Devereaux) Newman, one of nine children. He is a lifelong Battle Creek resident. He attended St. Philip Catholic School, from where he graduated high school in 1947. After high school, Louis worked at Gordon's Hardware, sold electrical supplies, and worked as a U.S. Mail carrier in Battle Creek until 1957. That year he opened Newman's Market on Territorial Road just west of 20th Street. Louis and his family served the Lakeview community there until 1995, when Louis sold the store and retired. After retirement, he was a familiar face at Lakeview Hardware where he assisted customers for many years. In high school, he met Margaret Ann Norton. They became a couple, fell in love and were married at the old St. Joseph Catholic Church rectory on December 2, 1950. She preceded him in death on November 12, 2011. Louis was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He served his community as a volunteer firefighter for the Battle Creek Township Fire Department from the early 1950's until the merger of the township and the city of Battle Creek occurred in the early 1980's. At one time Louis served on the fire department with all four of his sons! He loved Tiger Baseball, especially listening to Ernie Harwell announce it, whether on television or radio! He attended the last Tiger ball game played at Tiger's Stadium with his family. After the move to Comerica Park, Louis enjoyed bus trips to Comerica to watch his team play. Family was the top priority at the Newman household in Battle Creek. Louis has cooked Christmas breakfast for the entire family at Margaret Ann's and his home since 1968. Newman family dinners were religiously attended at Battle Creek restaurants for many years monthly. He is survived by 4 sons, James Newman and Duane (Debbie) Newman all of Battle Creek, Stephen (Rhonda) Newman of Homer, and Mark (Karen) Newman of Columbia City, IN; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, daughter LuAnn Newman, daughter-in-law Janet Newman, 3 sets of twin siblings Joe Newman and Mary Harrison, Gene and George Newman, Bob Newman and Ruthie Newman, and siblings Tom Newman and Anna Geesin. A Rosary was recited at the funeral home Wednesday evening. The Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday at St. Philip Catholic Church. Interment followed at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests that you remember Louis with a gift to either The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, or St. Joseph Catholic Church for their roof replacement fund.
