Bio

Memorial marker and he is also among the Tablets of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. Served with the 870th Bomb Squadron, 497th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force in World War II. Bombardier aboard B-29A Superfortress #42- 94050, nicknamed "Mammy Yokum." The number four engine was shot out by a Japanese fighter plane, and the motor detached and struck the number 3 engine, causing that one to catch fire. The fire could not be extinguished and the pilot ordered a bailout. The crew ditched 90 miles from the Japanese coast on return from a raid over Tokyo. Six crew were lost at sea, but 5 were rescued by the submarine USS Plainfish, about 68 miles southeast of Chosi Point. MACR 14525. Killed In Action were: 1st Lt. Harvey L Swenson , Pilot Harvey L Swenson 1st Lt. William Stevens , Co-Pilot SSgt. Gerard F Frorillo , Radio Operator SSgt. George W Shaw , Right Gunner SSgt. Oakley A Simon , Tail Gunner ~ Mother: Lillian Mary Batey Lillian Batey is the mother of Elby Hudson. Lillian was married to E. W. Hudson and later married Vol L. Gillett. she was born Dec. 9, 1899 and died March 27, 1992. Husband of Anna L. Hudson, 623 Mission Street, San Antonio, Texas. ~ Service ID: O1057471.
