Bio

Virgil Spitz, 81, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Bryan LGH West in Lincoln, Nebraska. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM and continue on Monday from 9:30 AM until service time all at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Columbus. The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 27 at 10:30 AM at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Pastor Adam Lassen officiating. Interment will be in the Gruetli Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials may be directed to those of family or donor's choice. Virgil L. Spitz was born July 5, 1935, in Columbus, Nebraska, to George and Inez (Person) Spitz. He attended District #16 Rural Platte County Grade School and graduated from Kramer High School in 1951. As a youth, Virgil worked for the Dr. Pepper Company and enjoyed playing baseball. He worked with his father on the family farm prior to his marriage to Darlyn Friess on July 20, 1957, at St. Luke's United Church of Christ. Virgil loved the farm, raising cattle, riding horses, and visiting with anyone that would take the time. He enjoyed playing softball, watching Husker sports, riding his snowmobile and three wheeler, and going hunting and fishing. He was on the board of the Nebraska Cattleman, and was active in the Team Pinning. Virgil was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ where he was a member of the Diaconate Board and a mentor for the confirmation students. Virgil is survived by: Wife – Darlyn Spitz of Columbus, NE Son – Kurt (Laura) Spitz of Columbus, NE Daughter – Kelly (Alan) Beiermann of Columbus, NE Son – Robert Spitz of Columbus, NE 6 Grandchildren 6 Great Grandchildren Brother – Orville (Phyllis) Spitz of Columbus, NE Brother – Delmar "Smokie" (Marlene A.) Spitz of Columbus, NE Brother – Duane "Mick" (Marlene K.)
