HARDIN ---Chester Bounous, 86, of Hardin, a pioneer agriculturist of Eastern Montana and Northern Wyoming, died Thursday evening, Dec. 26, 1996, in the Billings Deaconess Medical Center. He was born Feb. 19, 1910, in Provo, Utah, a son of Levi and Jenny Richards Bounous. He grew up on a fruit farm and attended area schools, later attending BYU. Following his education, he moved to Lodge Grass in 1934 to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs Irrigation Department. In the fall of that year, he began a long career with the Holly Sugar Corp., working as a beet dump operator, progressing to "Field Man" and eventually became the *Agricultural Manager" for the Holly Sugar Corp. A strong believer in conservation, Chet was one of the original supervisors for the Big Horn Soil Conservation District, formed in 1944. His leadership served as a stimulus to area farmers and ranchers to use conservation methods. While he pursued his professional career, he provided his talents for public service, serving on the Two Leggings Ditch Co. board, charter member of the Rural Electrical Association, served on the Federal Land Bank and was a School District 17-H board member for many years. He was a member of St. Johns Lodge 92 AF and AM, Al Bedoo Shrine, Lions Club and the Hardin Kiwanis Club. Chet married Romola Rundell on Jan. 9, 1934, in Columbus, and the couple made their home near Hardin. She died in 1991. He married Mary Lou Fox on Sept. 12, 1992, in Hardin. The couple made their home near Hardin. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Gary, of Billings and Ronald of Austin, Texas; one brother, Junior Bounous of Utah; one sister, Norma Moyle of Idaho; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
