Bio

Gerald Dee Thomas, age 83, died in Tyler on Sunday, March 12, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Joan Douglass Thomas of Tyler; his sons, Alan R. Thomas of Waco and his wife, Patti G. Thomas, Charles A. Thomas of Lewisville, and daughter, Alethea J. Thomas, of Temple; his two granddaughters, Chelsea R. Thomas of College Station, and Chloe' R. Thomas of Waco, and his grandson, Samuel C. Thomas of Waco. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin N. and Chloie Griggs Thomas of Winnsboro, Texas. Gerald was born in Webster, Texas on January 6, 1934. He graduated from Winnsboro High School in 1953 and Sam Houston State University in 1956 with a Bachelors of Science in industrial technology. Gerald and Joan married in Winnsboro in August 1954 and raised 3 children in Tyler. He held various engineering positions at Rockwell International in Sulphur Springs, General Electric in Tyler, McEvoy-Cameron Oil Field Equipment, in Tyler, and Vertex Telecommunication Antennas in Kilgore. He was an active member of Masonic Lodge #1233 of Tyler. A lifelong Southern Baptist, he was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church since moving to Tyler in 1964. In retirement, he enjoyed campground hosting in New Mexico and Colorado and eventually spent the summers at his cabin near South Fork, CO. Gerald was an avid reader, history buff, entertaining story teller, enthusiastic grandpa, metal "detector" and he relished observing the wildlife that crossed their path in CO. . Most of all, he was a beloved husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by his family and friends. Memorial services will be held at Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home at 2:00pm Saturday, March 18, 2017 officiated by Revs. Brian Price and Steve Ditmore of Tyler. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to Gideons of Tyler, Texas at 1408 Glenrose St, Tyler, TX 75701 - (903) 597-6098.
