Audrey Lynn Butler Rainey, 93, died Sunday, March 5, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Rainey was born November 15, 1923 in Upshur County, TX to Hans W. Butler and Venie McLendon Butler. She attended schools in New Diana and graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1941 at Glenwood High School. She worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell during the 1940’s. She married James R. Rainey on December 20, 1946 at Winterfield Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on April 18, 2001. She chose to be a stay-at-home mother to her two children. She also served as Children’s Sunday School director at Winterfield. She was also active in the WSCS and many other activities of the church. She returned to work in May of 1973 as a switchboard operator for First National Bank of Longview and worked there until her retirement. She was a member of the Greenshire Women’s Club and the First National/MBank retirees. Before James’s death, they enjoyed traveling, working in the yard and watching their grandchildren’s activities. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Rainey was preceded in death by her parents; her infant daughter, Martha Lyn Rainey; in-laws, D.H. Sr. and Carrie Rainey; brothers, Louis D. Butler and Tom Butler; daughter-in-law, Elaine Rainey; and grandsons, Stephen Butler and Todd Butler; in-laws that she loved as her own family, Opal McBeth, Anna and Lowry Brabham, Carrie V. and F.C. Dodd, Marguerite and Randall Smith and D.H. Jr. and Meltry Rainey. (Rader Funeral Home of Longview Internet)
