Betty Mae Schweiger, 94, of Grand Island died Monday, March 6, 2017, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Gollaher Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kelly Karges officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Grand Island. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Betty M. Schweiger was born July 1, 1922, at Grand Island, the daughter of William and Irma (Neumann) Reese. Her mother later married her stepfather, Lawrence Jay. She grew up in Grand Island, receiving her education from Grand Island public schools, graduating from Grand Island Senior High School in 1940. She was united in marriage to Bob R. Albee on March 4, 1944, at Holland, Mich. She later married Earle W. Schweiger March 30, 1986, at Las Vegas, Nev. The couple resided in Grand Island, where she was employed by the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center as an administrative assistant for 15 years until her retirement in 1988. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Pauls Lutheran Church and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island, along with her memberships in the Platt Duetsche Ladies Society, Liederkranz, Saddle Club and Riverside Golf Club. She enjoyed playing cards, golfing, dancing and bowling, but her greatest joy came from the time she spent with her family and friends. Those left to cherish her memory include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and René Albee of Austin, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Terry Manzel of Bellevue; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Robert and Crystal Schweiger of Idaho Falls, Idaho; grandchildren, Seth and Daesha Manzel, Chandra (Mrs. John) Aoueille’, Darcy, Taylor and Reese Albee; stepgrandchildren, Earle W. “Billy” Schweiger III and Kimberly Sims; eight great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Stumpff of Kearney; a sister-in-law, Mary Obermiller of Grand Island; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Hazel and Dave Rowland of Willow Spring, N.C.; several nieces, a nephew and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earle Schweiger; a son, Gary A. Albee; a stepson, Earle W. Schweiger Jr.; and a brother, Pershing Reese.
