Bio

Violet Lela Varney Christensen CENTENARIAN 1917 - 2017 Early Life: She was born December 7, 1917, in Yakima, Washington, to James Lloyd and Lela Ann Berry Varney. Her mother died in the 1918 flu epidemic and she was raised by her father's second wife Ethel Adams Kelly Varney . Life's Work | Service | Interests: Violet married Dale Clair Christensen of Brigham City, Utah, on June 2, 1936, in the Salt Lake Temple. They had four children. Following a divorce, she raised her children alone making extreme sacrifices so that they had every advantage. She was an excellent seamstress and used that talent to pay off her home and send her four children to college. She sewed her children's clothes for years, creating designer masterpieces that other people admired and wanted. She loved to camp and took her three boys camping every chance she could. She gave of her time in service to others, nurturing, teaching and lifting spirits. Many people have thanked her for what she did for them. After her children were grown, she went back to school and with her degree was in charge of the science labs at Merritt College in Oakland until she retired. She is well known for her fabulous, huge, garden filled with plants and flowers from all over the world. She always found extra time to improve her garden. She was a lifetime learner. She taught her children to seek knowledge by her example of continuously studying: reading, taking classes, then doing. She became an accomplished artist and her beautiful paintings adorn the walls of her home, her children and friend's homes. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she held many positions at the wards and stakes where she lived. She was a worker in the Oakland California Temple for over twenty years. Violet Lela Varney Christensen, in her 100th year, passed away in her home, February 4, 2017, in Oakland, California.
