Ben Franklin was born on April 24, 1932 in Elbert, Colorado to Samuel and Sylvie (Clibon) Franklin. He grew up in Colorado and spent much of his young life working on his family’s ranch. He attended high school in Colorado Springs. As a young man, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War era from May 1953 to May 1955 – spending most of that time in Germany. Ben received many awards such as the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal & Army Occupation Medal (Germany). After his military service, he attended Colorado A & M for a short time. Ben married Dorothy Franklin on January 24, 1960 and they recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in January 2017. They have made their home in the Valley area for over 40 years. Ben was a jack of all trades most of his life but he mostly fixed things – cars, tractors, farm implements, or anything that needed fixing. He loved bowling with his family. When his kids were in high school, he enjoyed cheering them on in football, wrestling, basketball, track & softball. He also was an avid fan of Nebraska sports, especially the Husker Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Baseball teams. He occasionally rooted for the Colorado Buffalos but finally gave in to Nebraska football later in life. He was a lifelong Denver Broncos fan and very happy when the Broncos won the Super Bowl. He also enjoyed going to the casino, he always had his special machines and he played them a special way. Ben passed away on February 9, 2017 in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 84 years, 9 months, and 16 days.
