Bio

Evelyn M. Shewan, who died on January 21, 2016 in Lubbock, Texas, was born to Ferne Mary McNeece Keen and Truman Lowell Keen on July 12, 1923, in Springfield, Missouri. In the late 1920's, she and her parents and siblings moved to North Sacramento, California, where she attended elementary and junior high school. In the mid-1930s, she and her family moved to Reno, Nevada, where she attended high school, and in 1941, graduated from Reno High School. After this, she met her future husband William H. "Bill" Shewan who lived in Carson City, but was attending the University of Nevada in Reno. Bill left the University to join the U.S. Army and eventually became an Infantry Second Lieutenant. Before he shipped out from Reno to the European Theater, Bill and Evelyn were married on March 23, 1944. Also, Evelyn worked during the War as a telephone operator for Nevada Bell. Her husband Bill was wounded in action in France and returned to Dibble Army Hospital in Menlo Park, California. Evelyn immediately joined him and lived in Redwood City, California. After he recovered from his wounds, they returned to Reno, where Bill resumed his studies at the University. In June of 1947, he was graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and was hired by Robert Allen, the State Highway Engineer, to work in the Bridge Division of the State Highway Department in Carson City, Nevada. Evelyn lived in Carson City from 1947 until 2005 and was a mother, homemaker, and a part-time employee of the State of Nevada, especially during legislative sessions. Also, she worked as a proof reader for the Nevada Printing Office and the Legislative Counsel Bureau, as well as a working as a PBX operator and in the legislative message center. She also was very active in a number of civic activities in Carson City, including the Parent-Teachers Association, Cub Scouts as a den mother and assistant den mother, the March of Dimes, the Republican Women's Organization, the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi, the Nevada Landmarks Society, Friends of the Ormsby Library, and the Association of Retired Public Employees of Nevada, including serving as State President of RPEN. When her mother-in-law, Sally Shewan, died in 1964, Evelyn ran the family's rooming house at West Telegraph and North Division Streets for a year. Evelyn was a devout member of the Airport Road Church of Christ, which she attended regularly and taught many Sunday School classes during her time in Carson City. In October of 2005, she moved to Lubbock, Texas to be near her son, Jim. While in Lubbock, Evelyn was a devout member of Green Lawn Church of Christ, attending all services through the week and especially the Ladies' Bible Class which she enjoyed immensely. As her health failed, she was no longer able to attend services at Green Lawn, but instead attended a Sunday afternoon service at the Carillon Life Community Chapel, which was under the direction of the Quaker Avenue Church of Christ in Lubbock. Finally, throughout her adult life she remained a loyal fan of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers through good years and some bad years. She especially enjoyed the World Series in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, husband, Bill, and brothers Harold, Jack, and Aubrey Keen. She is survived by her sister Virginia of Williams Arizona, son Jim of Lubbock, and sons Michael and Pat of Charleston, South Carolina. Additionally, she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was especially close to her niece Sherry Holmes and Sherry's husband Harry of Williams, Arizona. At her request, there will be no funeral services and in lieu of flowers, she would appreciate contributions to the William H. Shewan Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund at the University of Nevada, Reno, the Hospice of Lubbock, or to any other charitable organization. On behalf of Evelyn, the family extends the most sincere appreciation to the following for what they have done for her over the years: the leadership and members of the Airport Road, Green Lawn, and Quaker Avenue Churches of Christ; Mae Bibbs and the caring staff of Serendipity Suites; Dr. Jeremy Brown and his caring staff at Hospice of Lubbock; and Les and Jen Gary and their caring staff at WheelCare Transportation.
