Crump Military services for Col. James T. Crump, former Baytonian who was killed Thursday in a jet plane collision near Uvalde, were scheduled at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio. Military graveside rites are scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Grandview Cemetery, on the Spencer Highway approximately five miles from La Porte. Col. Crump’s plane collided with another F-102 jet 70 miles east of Kelly Air Force Base, where he was commander of the Texas Air National Guard 149th Fighter Group. The pilot of the other plane was not injured and managed to land his plane at Kelly AFB. He is Capt. Harold H. Blackshear. [He was promoted] to captain when only 19 years of age during World War II. He became full colonel last year at the age of 39. A Purple Heart award winner, he was shot down five times on flights in World War II and the Korean War. On his 80th mission in Korea he was shot down near the Yalu River and was rescued under rifle fire by an Air Force rescue plane. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and numerous other medals. A spokesman at Ellington Air Force Base told The Sun that Col. Crump was considered a “real hero” by everyone in the service. Col. Crump was commandant of the only Air National Guard jet instrument school in the country at Ellington Air Force Base. He was operations officer of the 149th Fighter Group at Ellington several years. He was a graduate of the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. Col. Crump grew up in Barbers Hill and worked in the instrument department at Humble Oil and Refining Co.’s Baytown Refinery after World War II. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Lil Crump, and two daughters, Jamie and Debbie, San Antonio; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Crump of Robeline, La.; his grandmother, Mrs. Louella Chitty of Robeline, La.; a brother, Earl Crump of Canyon. He had several relatives in the Baytown area.
