Husband of Esther Violet LaVerne (Tastad) Smith. He was also survived by a son, Timothy (Kristin) Smith; five daughters, Lawrel (Kevin) Toyne, Naomi Schmitz, Cynthia (Mark) Granger, Sidonia (Robert) Burnell, Sonja (Milton) Myhre; and a sister, Darlene (Thomas) Hagen. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Christine Cooper; a son-in-law, Mike Schmitz; two brothers, Neil and Doug (1929-1937); step-father, Seivert Solheim; and his parents, Melford Dewain and Lillie Augusta (Carlson) Smith.
