Lavinia was the daughter of Levi D. Jarrett and Susanah Brown. Her father Levi joined the Confederate Army when she was a toddler and was killed at the Battle of Shiloh. Lavinia lived with her mother and siblings on the farm of her grandfather, Col. Wiley Brown, for several years. Lavinia married Junius E. Vandegrift December 3rd, 1882. Junius was a dairyman in Nashville. Later in life he ran a company store for a woolen mill, where employees used company script to buy goods. Junius was a "moneyed man" according to his nephew, John D. Bennett, but his wife Lavinia "went through money like a dose of salts". John D. recalled Junius had a wood yard and a lime kiln in addition to the store, but when Junius died they were $17,000 in debt. Lavinia got $10,000 in life insurance and, according to John D., "that damn fool woman went to McAllister, Texas and opened a furniture store, but them miners don't use no furniture, so she went broke." Lavinia was the sister of Sallie P. (Jarratt) Bennett, John D.'s mother. John D. called Lavinia "Nan Hock". Junius and Lavinia had six children. 1) Paulina b. Sep 1884 TN. d. ? 2) Mamie M. b. Jan 1887 TN d. ? 3) Orville b. Oct 10, 1890 TN. d. Jun 24, 1967 TX 4) John J. B. 1893 5) William Briggs . b. Aug 25, 1894 TN d. Dec 25, 1969 TX 6) Leroy Franklin b. Jan 28, 1896 TN d. Oct 3, 1973 OK Junius died in 1905. After his death Lavinia left Tennessee and by the 1910 US census she was in Oklahoma, running a hotel. Her son Leroy remained in Oklahoma. John D.'s story about McAllister looks like it may have some truth to it, as Lavinia died in the care of her son, William B. Vandegrift, in Whichita Falls, TX in 1927. The family sent her body back to Nashville for burial. Her death certificate lists her date of birth as unknown, age "about 66", and incorrectly lists her grandfather, Jack Jarratt, as her father.
