Dr. Merrill J. Allen, Sr., age 85, of Bloomington, died Sunday at Meadowood Health Pavilion in Bloomington. Dr. Allen was co-founder of Indiana University School of Optometry in 1953 and published over 236 research papers and 2 textbooks on vision and highway safety. He conducted seminal research in physiological optics and automotive safety and was responsible for the global implementation of many life-saving features, including high mounted rear window tail lights, daytime headlights, and front and rear fender side lights. Throughout his teaching and research career at IU, Dr. Allen was recognized by academia, government and private industry as a foremost world expert in vision-related standards, vision and human nutrition, and highway safety. Dr. Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Joan (Gower) Allen; his brother, Millard Allen; and his parents, Dr. and Mrs. M.H. Allen of Corpus Christi, Texas. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Dr. William and Betty Allen of Corpus Christi, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Deborah Allen of Bloomington; one daughter, Marjorie Jayne Allen-Granger of Bloomington; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Andrew and Lee (Hardy) Granger of Indianapolis; grandson, Mathew A. Allen of Nashville, Tennessee; and one granddaughter, Sarah E. Allen of Los Angeles, California. Extended family survivors residing in Texas include nephews, Millard H.
