Bio

Charles was born in his parents, Charles J. Gude and Helen (Meyer) Gude, home in Nebraska City, NE. He attended St. Bernard's Academy and graduated with the class of 1941. He attended Peru State College in Peru, NE and later Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Worsham's in 1944. He was married on April 22-1944 at St. Ida's Catholic Church in Chicago, IL to Lorraine E. Nystrom. Following their marriage, he was deployed with the Untied States Marie Corps to Paris Island in South Carolina for Basic training during World War II. Following basic training, he was deployed to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, CA and remained there until the end of the war and his honorable discharge. After his discharge he and Lorraine returned to Chicago for a short time and then moved to Decatur, IL and was employed with J.J. Moran Funeral Home. In 1950 the family moved to Nebraska City and Charles worked at the Fassbender Funeral Home. In 1955, he opened his own funeral home Gude Mortuary. Charles was active in the Nebraska City Community. He was a life long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus including being a Fourth Degree Knight; a member of the Nebraska City Fire Department and served as their President. He was a member of the American Legion and served as their Commander on the Board for many years. Was a member of the Nebraska City Eagles Club and served as their president. He served on the St. Mary's Church Board; the Lourdes Central Catholic School Board; the St. Mary's Cemetery Board; the Civil Service Commission and served as secretary/treasurer of the John Ramold Detachment of the U.S. Marie Corps League. He was also a member of the National and State Funeral Directors Association and U.C.T.
