Bio

Bernard J. “Bernie” Liska, 71, of Houston, Texas, formerly of West Lafayette, Ind., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002 in Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. He was born May 31, 1931 in Hillsboro to William and Helen (Pliner) Liska. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1948 as Valedictorian of his class. He earned his bachelor’s, masters and doctoral degrees in food science at the University of Wisconsin where he also achieved the rank of 2nd Lt. in the R.O.T.C. He married Donna Peterson of Green Bay on September 6, 1952. He served for a short time as assistant professor of dairy science at the University of Florida. He joined the Purdue faculty in 1959 as an assistant professor of food science. He was named director for of the newly formed Food Science Institute in 1968 and became director of the Agriculture Experiment Station in 1975. The former Dean of the Purdue University School of Agriculture, he helped start a new department and strengthened basic sciences while he headed the school from 1980-1985. He retired in 1997 and was named a professor emeritus of food science. During his career, he served on the Purdue University Senate and was active in numerous organizations including the Environmental Health Institute, Agricultural Research Institute, and American Dairy Science Association. In 1983, Dr. Liska was elected president of the Institute of Food Technologists, a professional organization for the international food science community. In 2001, he received the Outstanding Food Science Award from Purdue. Surviving are his wife, Donna, two daughters, Cheryl (Ed) Colman of Houston, Julie (Scott) Esperson of Minneapolis, six grandchildren, sister-in-law, Evelyn Liska of Onalaska, brother-in-law, Fred Stanek of Hillsboro, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Robert and infant, John, and sister, Dorothy Stanek. A Memorial Mass was held December 9, 2002 in West Lafayette. The family set up a memorial fund to support graduate students in food science programs. Donations may be made to the Purdue Foundation and sent to: Purdue Memorial Union, Room B-50, 101 N. Grant St., West Lafayette, Ind. 47906 Food Science Graduate Student Teaching Award The Bernie J. a Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award was first awarded in 1999. The awarded was created by Dr. Bernie Liska, former Dean of Purdue’s College of Agriculture and Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists, to recognize graduate students who excelled in teaching. He cherished the opportunity to recognize students’ work as he felt it created drive towards excellence. Upon Dr. Liska’s death, gifts in his memory, including those of his daughters, Julie Liska-Esperson (FS ’92) and Cheryl Colman, established an endowment, ensuring that his memory and his wishes continue in perpetuity. Today, the endowment supports one teaching award each semester. An "in-perpetuity plaque" lists the names of all of the recipients, and a plaque and a financial award are presented to the student recipients.
