Youngest son of Elbert Lee and Eva Ann (Baty) Hammond, his parents were farming in the Liberty precinct of Cass County, and were recorded there on the 1910 census in June, less than a month before Richard's birth. The family was still there for the 1910 census, but by September of 1918 when Richard registered for the draft, they were in Cedar County, and remained there for the 1920 census. His parents next moved to Weeping Water by 1930, and within a few years after that census, he married Esther Louise. A Civil Engineer, Richard appeared on the 1940 census at Lincoln, Nebraska with his wife and daughter. They later resided at Columbus, Nebraska before returning to Weeping Water. According to his funeral notice which appeared on page 5 of the Columbus, Nebraska Telegram of 03 Dec 1971, Richard was a veteran of WWI and a Master Mason. Services were held at Christ Lutheran Church, Louisville with interment following at this cemetery. Richard was survived by his wife, Esther Louise; and daughter Donna LuDee (Harry) Holmes of Omaha.
