"Marilyn M. (Vavra) Coates was born March 31, 1939 to Vilem and Margaret (Lund) Vavra in rural Thurston County, Nebraska. She passed away November 1, 2016 at Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska after struggling, two weeks short of a year, with complications following open heart surgery, at the age of 77 years. Marilyn attended school at Parks Country School through the 8th grade. She attended Lyons High School in Lyons, Nebraska. She spent her adult life living in Lyons, Dakota City, Nebraska and Blair, Nebraska, with her final years in Oakland. She worked numerous jobs outside the home, but appreciated being at home most. She loved spending time tending to her flower beds and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed sewing, making jean quilts and crocheting. She was always up for a game of cards or dice upwards, and a puzzle was always in the works. You could often find her cherishing time at many of the grandkids ball games and music concerts. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eldon; brothers, David and Warren. She is survived by her daughter, DarRay (Mike) Tripp of Treynor, IA; sons, Montgomery (Paula) Dixon of Carson, IA, Brian Dixon of Fairbanks, AK, Michael Dixon of Sun City, AZ, Nathaniel (Betty) Dixon of Craig, NE, Scott (Betsy) Coates of West Point, NE; brothers, Dale Vavra, Wayne (Evelyn) Vavra both of Lyons; sisters, Carol Smith of Fremont, NE, Caroline (Bill) Phillips of The Dalles, OR; 16 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren."
