Sources of this data was taken from THE MUSINGS, Fall 1984, pg. 115-127 titled The McKinney Family by David O. Hale; THE MUSINGS, Spring 1994, pg 44 McKinney-Lee, & a list of graves sent to Hope Creek from a descendant, Gena Faye Martin of Fayetteville dated 9 Dec 1989. The photo of the crypts was taken by Mr. Ron Burnett & featured in an article "Sermons In Stone" by Abby Burnett which appeared in the OZARK MOUNTAINEER, Feb. 1993, pgs 32-34. McKINNEY, REBECCA MARGO "PEGGY" also called "MAMA PEGGY": a large flat raised crypt with a cross and M. P. etched into top surface. She was Presbyterian b. 4 Apr 1788, Wilkes Co, GA, d/o James L. & Sarah Lee. The Lee family settled in Russell Co, VA. Peggy was a first cousin of General Robert E. Lee. Peggy md. ca 1809 in Washington Co, VA to John Meyers McKinney b. 31 Dec 1779 Tom's Creek, Surrey Co, NC to James & Mary BALLARD McKinney. The McKinney lineage is John Meyers; James, Collin, Daniel & Mordecia. From 1817 until the 1820s one source puts John & Peggy in Sparta, White, TN. Another source states they were in Perry Co, KY. In 1825-26, they were living on Kickapoo Prairie in Greene Co, MO. In 1830, they were listed on the Jackson Co, AR census. Peggy's brother Giles Lee & family were in Osage Co, MO. in 1831 and John & Peggy LEE McKinney were living there too for a while. In 1834-35, John & Peggy were in Fayetteville, Washington Co, AR and by 1836-37 they were residing in Combs, Madison Co, AR on the land which now includes Brashears Cemetery. A tulip tree was brought with them from Missouri and planted on their property which still lives. They are listed on the 1840 Madison County census for Hilburn Twp. John had 100 acres, as did sons James & Wylie. After Peggy's death ca 1842, John went to Texas. He became a Texas Ranger. He was a vigorous man and was youthful in his appearance. He died 26 Nov 1847 when a horse fell on him. He is buried in McKinney Family Cemetery on the Kendall ranch, N. W. of Forest Grove, in Collin Co, TX. John & Rebecca Margot "Peggy" LEE McKinney had these children: 1) JAMES McKINNEY b. 1810 Va, s/o John & Peggy LEE McKinney; James was killed by bushwhackers in 1863 near his home at old Scully, now Brashears Switch. He acquired the land where the cemetery lies when his father went to Texas. James md 1834 in Greene Co, MO to Rhoda BURDEN, who went on to Texas after his death. Mrs. Martin does not believe James is buried in one of these crypts. 2) WYLIE B. McKINNEY b. 1812, d. 1902 & buried Franklin Co, AR, md. Mary COFFEY who with their infant daughter is buried in one of the crypts. 3) SARAH McKINNEY b. 1814; md. Nathaniel Burden (bro/o James's wife Rhoda) 4) JANE McKINNEY b. 1815; md. Mad. Co. John England Myers; they went to Yell Co, AR. They had one son in the Union Army & another fought for the Confederacy. A son William C. Myers b. 13 Oct 1844 first joined the Confederate's Co H 1 Ark Mt. Rifles in 1861 with his brother Wiley J. Myers, but was sent home as being too young. In Sep 1863 after being threatened with hanging by a marauding band of Union soldies, his mother Jane & sister, Sarah MYERS Tillman pled for his life. Family legend says William & Wiley refused to fire their guns to kill, for fear of shooting the other. William was wounded 2 Apr 1864 & he rec'd a pension from Yell Co, AR. 5) GILES McKINNEY b. ca 1818 TN & believed buried in one of the crypts. 6) NELSON McKINNEY b. 1822; md. 1) Lydia ___; md. 2) America FAULKNER 7) SOPHIE McKINNEY b. ca 1824, d. 1849; md. James Graham (Grayum) 8) GEORGE WILLIAM McKINNEY b. 1827 TN, md. Eliz. BIRKHEAD 9) ROLAND McKINNEY b. ca 1830, d. 1870 Montgomery, AR, md. Martha ___ 10) JOHN MYERS McKINNEY b. 14 Apr 1832 Greene Co, MO, d. 1 Jan 1918 McKinney, Collin Co, TX; was a Confederate Capt; md. 1) Eliza Jane SNYDER b. 1832, d. 1852; md. 2) in 1857 Polly Ann COFFEY b. 22 June 1840, d. Jan 1918, a week after husb.
