Eugene “Gene” Kuhn, 92, of Columbus, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at the VA Hospital in Omaha. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Revs. Patrick Sparling and Peter Jurchen officiating. Interment will be in Columbus Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and 1-2 p.m. Friday at the church, with a 1:45 p.m. family prayer service. Gene was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Columbus to John Henry and Flora (Plugge) Kuhn. He attended Lutheran grade school and graduated from Kramer High School. On May 15, 1942, Gene was united in marriage to Marcella Mae Hiermeier in York. On Nov. 26, 1943, Gene entered the U.S. Army. He served in the European, African and Middle East Theaters. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received four Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 16, 1946. After returning to Columbus, Gene worked at Behlen Manufacturing and then was owner of Cozy Corner Station and Kuhn Oil Company. Gene was a member of the American Legion and VFW, serving as past commander of both. He also served on several national VFW committees. He was a past member of the Izaak Walton, Golden Eagle member of the Eagles Club and Chef De Gare of 40&8. Gene served as an elder at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed Nebraska football and spending time with his family. Gene is survived by his wife, Marcella Kuhn of Columbus; daughters, Joanne Lukert of David City and Sharon (Jim) Resh of Silver Creek; son, Eugene (Debbie) Kuhn Jr. of Gautier, Mississippi; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, John and Flora Kuhn; daughter, Deanna Wolfe; granddaughter, Charlene Keyhan; son-in-law, Darrell Lukert; sisters, Leta Kment and Esther Kucera; and infant brother, John Kuhn.
