Bio

Funeral services will be Wed., Dec. 20, for James Thomas Beckers, 79, Howard, who died on Dec. 16, 2006, at Madison Community Hospital. The services will be held in the Willoughby Funeral Home at Howard, and burial will be in Pleasantview Cemetery at Carthage. Beckers was born on March 3, 1927, near Gregory to Nick and Marie (Kaba) Beckers. He graduated from Gregory High School and entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 8, 1945. he was stationed in Germany. He married Lydia Meijer in 1948 in Germany. After his honorable discharge from the service, they settled on the family farm near Gregory. Later they moved to Winner, where he worked for Winner Gas and Electric for many years before starting his own electrical business, Beckers Electric. He married JoAnn Daughters in 1970 at Pierre. He was a member of the Winner American Legion and VFW. Survivors include a daughter, Nell (Verlyn) Button of Carthage; two sons, Fred (Verna) of Kansas City, Mo., and Dudley of Tucker, Ark.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Keever of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives, Lydia in 1981, and JoAnn in 2004; a brother, Nicholas; and a sister, Anne McCrystal. Madison Daily Leader 12/18/2006
