Bio

Lila Irene Hiller of Grand Island, Nebraska passed away on September 27, 2016. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 3 at Resurrection Catholic Church in Grand Island followed by interment at 3:00 p.m. in Sts. Peter and Mary Catholic Cemetery in Bellwood. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Born September 27, 1924 in Bellwood, Nebraska, Lila was the daughter of Otto and Lucille (Koenig) Selzer. She married Paul Hiller in 1946 after he returned from WWII and they enjoyed a busy life as he pitched baseball for a Dodger's farm team and then the Nebraska Semi-Pro League. Lila received her original teaching certificate in 1942 from Kearney College and later a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Kearney State College in 1972. Lila's lifelong love of teaching endeared her to her students and she still recalled and recognized each one as they grew to adults. A dedicated elementary school teacher, Lila taught in numerous schools starting in Butler County (Garrison, District 41, Bellwood) and then on to the Kearney and Fremont school systems. In Grand Island, she taught at Humpty Dumpty Preschool as well as kindergarten and first grade in the Grand Island Public Schools (Newell, West Lawn) for nearly 25 years. Lila was a long time member of the choir at St. Mary's Cathedral. After retirement, Lila volunteered in the Cancer Center at St. Francis Medical Center where she received an honorary award for her 17 years of service. She was also a member of the Grand Island Retired Teachers Association, the Nebraska State Education Association, and the Liederkranz. She is survived by her brother, Jack (Claryce) Selzer; her children, Pamela (Ray) Glaser, Paula (Ned) Hiller, Patti Von Riesen, Timothy (Marilyn) Hiller, and Penny Tillman; her grandchildren, Laura (Adam) Stodola, Brian (Alicia) Glaser, Christine Hiller, Paul (Ashley) Hiller, Allison (Ty) Geiser, Ashley Tillman, Benjamin Kirsch, and Steven Kirsch; and her great grandchildren, Jaxon and Alaina. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Lila was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, and her parents, Lucy and Otto.
