Harley “Dean” Gilbert, 81, of Latham, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, September 18, 2016 at Lake Pointe of Augusta. Born July 14, 1935 in McCracken, Kansas, he was the son of Harold “Hap” and Clara Lucille (Flack) Gilbert. He was raised and received his education in McCracken graduating from McCracken High School in 1953. In 1955, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country. He was honorably discharged in 1957. In 1958, Dean moved to Wichita, Kansas and began working as a salesman in electronics. He was united in marriage to Betty I. Amlong on July 21, 1961 in Miami, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Wichita for several years where Dean continued his sales career. Dean and Betty moved to Latham in October of 1972. In his later years, Dean served as a pastor at Latham, Logan, Long Island and Atlanta United Methodist Churches. Betty preceded him in death on October 10, 2000. Dean was a member of Latham United Methodist Church, Scottish Rite Consistory, Midian Shrine, was a Past Master of the Latham Masonic Lodge and was past President of the Latham Lion’s Club, Butler County Shrine Club and Butler County Fire District #6. He also served on Hickory Township Board for 20 years and the Bluestem School Board. He enjoyed taking pictures, collecting postcards and coins and going to auctions. His family includes: His brother: Byron “Babe” Gilbert and wife, Arlene; His grandson: Richard Jones and wife, Mindy; His granddaughter: Jeanette Morris; His great grandchildren: Shanna, Wade, Chelsea, Savannah and Billy; His 9 great-great grandchildren; and Several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Dean was preceded in death by a brother, LeRoy Gilbert. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas. Masonic and Military Committal Honors will follow at Brown Low Cemetery north of Latham. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors that evening. Memorials have been established in Dean’s name for Latham United Methodist Church, Logan United Methodist Church and Long Island United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
