Bio

Marilyn Lee Griffin Rasmussen, age 81, of Whittier, California passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 16, 2014 in Cooke Pass, Montana while on vacation at her beloved family cabin. Marilyn was born on May 3, 1933 in Des Moines, Iowa to John Gladstone Griffin and Helene Mildred Terpstra Griffin. She had one younger brother James Gordon Griffin. At six weeks of age, Marilyn and her parents left Iowa to Prescott, Arizona where they lived for four years before moving to Long Beach, California then eventually settling in Monrovia, California. She graduated from Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School in 1951. Marilyn graduated from Whittier College with a BA degree in Home Economics. During her junior year in college, she met her future husband Theodore E. Rasmussen, Jr ("TR") in a co-ed archery class. They were married in October 1955. Marilyn taught one year at Pomona High School then four years at Santa Fe High School in Whittier. She also taught 19 years part-time at Cerritos College and Whittier Adult School, and 18 years at Whittier Community Blind Center. She enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, reading cookbooks and other books, especially at the family vacation home during the summer in Montana. She also enjoyed spending time at the family beach house in Capistrano Beach, California and traveling in general, especially to casinos. She was an active member of more than 55 years and past president of the Whittier Home Economists in Home & Community. She was a 40 year member of Delta Kappa Gamma - Delta Tau Chapter and past president of the Whittier Chapter of the National Charity League. She was active member and past president of the Friendly Hills Woman's Club, an associate member of Assistance League of Whittier, an active member of P.E.O. - OC Chapter, Whittier Republican Women Federation, First United Methodist Church - Prayer Shawl Circle and a patron of Whittier Guild Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Special Children's League - Whittier Committee and The Whole Child. She was a proud Whittier College Metaphonian Society member. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 58 years TR Rasmussen, two sons and one daughter
